Microsoft Extends AI-Powered Copilot to Windows 10 Users in Latest Update

In a recent development, Microsoft has rolled out a preview of its AI-powered Copilot feature for Windows 10 users, a capability previously exclusive to Windows 11. This marks a significant expansion of accessibility for Copilot, with a Release Preview version now available for testing. The feature mirrors its Windows 11 counterpart, residing as a button on the taskbar’s right-hand side, providing users with an AI-driven chatbot for answering queries and text generation.

While the core functionality remains consistent between the two operating systems, some differences exist due to variations in available skills and actions. Windows 10 Home or Pro users enrolled in the Release Preview channel can currently explore Copilot, and the broader user base is expected to receive this update in the coming days or weeks.

Microsoft’s decision to introduce Copilot to Windows 10 aligns with its recent announcement of revisiting the approach to the operating system, despite plans to end support in less than two years. The company emphasizes ongoing investments in Windows 10, hinting at potential future AI features. However, Microsoft clarifies that there will be no major updates to Windows 10, affirming that the current version, 22H2, stands as the final iteration. Support for Windows 10 is slated to continue until October 14th, 2025.

The move to bring Copilot to Windows 10 reflects the operating system’s enduring popularity, surpassing Windows 11 in terms of adoption. Recent internal Microsoft data indicates that, two years after its launch, Windows 11 has reached only 400 million devices, while Windows 10 achieved this milestone a year post-launch and surpassed 600 million devices a few months after its second anniversary.
