Google Brings Gemini AI to Gmail and Workspace Apps to Boost Productivity

Google has unveiled its Gemini AI side panel in Gmail, designed to assist users in writing and summarizing emails. This new feature, announced during Google’s I/O developer conference last month, is now being rolled out to users, alongside additions to Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive.

Enhanced Email Drafting and Summarization

With the Gemini AI side panel, Gmail users can now get help drafting emails and receive suggested responses to existing threads. The AI can also answer questions and find specific information within your inbox or Google Drive files. For instance, users can ask Gemini questions like, “What was the PO number for my agency?” or “How much did the company spend on the last marketing event?”

Google ensures that while Gemini will provide initial prompts, users are encouraged to ask their own queries for a more tailored experience.

Availability

These advanced features are exclusive to Google Workspace customers who have a Gemini Business or Enterprise add-on, a Gemini Education or Education Premium add-on, or a Google One AI Premium subscription.

Gemini AI in Other Workspace Apps

In addition to Gmail, the Gemini AI side panel is available in several other Google Workspace apps:

  • Docs: Helps in writing, refining content, summarizing information, and brainstorming ideas. Users can also create content based on other files.
  • Slides: Assists in generating new slides and custom images, and summarizing presentations.
  • Sheets: Helps in tracking and organizing data, creating tables, generating formulas, and performing various tasks.
  • Drive: Summarizes documents and provides quick facts about projects.

A Broader Trend in Tech

Google’s move to incorporate generative AI features into its popular apps follows similar initiatives by other tech giants. Meta recently added its AI chatbot into Instagram and WhatsApp, while Apple announced generative AI enhancements for Siri, Messages, Mail, and Notes.

While the adoption of AI in everyday products has been met with enthusiasm by some, it has also faced resistance from users who prefer traditional tools. However, as AI integration becomes more widespread, avoiding these tools may become increasingly challenging.
