Apple Unveils Vision Pro: A $3,500 AR/VR Headset Redefining Digital Experience
In a highly anticipated move, Apple is set to launch its latest technological marvel, the Vision Pro headset, marking the tech giant’s first significant release since the introduction of the Apple Watch nearly a decade ago. Priced at $3,499, the Vision Pro is poised to make waves in the world of augmented and virtual reality, representing a significant leap forward in online interaction beyond the realm of smartphones.
The Vision Pro was officially showcased at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference on June 05, 2023, in Cupertino, California, with eager consumers getting their hands on it starting Friday at US Apple stores. However, early reviews suggest that while the device is undeniably impressive, it comes with notable trade-offs that may impact its immediate success.
According to tech reviewers, the Vision Pro boasts an “astonishing” wow factor with state-of-the-art imagery, allowing users to open and close apps with their eyes and fingers, creating a unique and immersive experience. Despite this, criticisms have arisen regarding the headset’s weight, its potential to mess up the user’s hair, and the necessity of a clunky battery pack.

In a strategic promotional move, Apple CEO Tim Cook adorned the cover of Vanity Fair wearing the Vision Pro, though facing criticism for revealing the device at a conference without personally trying it on. The company refers to the Vision Pro as its entry into “spatial computing” rather than traditional virtual reality, emphasizing its broader applications beyond tech enthusiasts and gamers.
Apple envisions users incorporating the Vision Pro into various aspects of daily life, from streaming movies to working, chatting with friends, and toggling through apps. The device is promoted with 600 specifically designed apps and games, with one million compatible apps available. Disney has joined forces with Apple, providing 150 3D movies at launch, while Netflix, Spotify, and Google have yet to adapt their apps for the headset.
To address the intricacies of the device, Apple allows potential buyers to test the Vision Pro by appointment at its US stores, recognizing that most consumers may not be familiar with gesture controls. Despite the mixed early reviews, analysts from Wedbush Securities predict strong pre-orders, estimating around 600,000 units to be sold this year. The long-term goal, according to Dan Ives of Wedbush, is for the Vision Pro to seamlessly integrate with other Apple devices, particularly the iPhone, in the coming years.
As Apple ventures into uncharted territory with the Vision Pro, only time will tell whether this ambitious foray into spatial computing will revolutionize the digital landscape or face challenges akin to its predecessors in the AR/VR market.
