Microsoft Introduces Universal ‘Windows App’ for Seamless Cross-Platform Access

Microsoft has unveiled a groundbreaking ‘Windows App’ designed to provide users across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, Windows, and web browsers with a unified gateway to the Windows operating system. Initially an evolution of the Windows 365 app, this versatile application now acts as a central hub for streaming Windows from various sources, including remote PCs, Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Microsoft Dev Box, and Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Services.

The Windows App, currently available in preview, offers support for multiple monitors, customizable display resolutions and scaling, as well as device redirection for peripherals like webcams, storage devices, and printers. Notably, while the app is accessible on a range of platforms, its preview version is not yet available for Android.

This development comes in the wake of Microsoft’s strategic reorganization, forming a dedicated “Windows and Web Experiences” team after the departure of former Surface and Windows chief Panos Panay. The team’s focus on AI-powered web services for Windows has already manifested in Windows 11, featuring dynamic web-powered elements such as a search interface, widgets system, and Copilot integration.

In light of revelations during the FTC v. Microsoft hearing, it’s evident that Microsoft envisions a future where Windows transitions fully to the cloud on the consumer side, a path already explored with Windows 365 for businesses. The introduction of the Windows App serves as a pivotal step, potentially paving the way for consumers to access cloud PCs and Windows applications on devices irrespective of their operating system.
