WhatsApp to End Support for Older Android Devices Starting January 1, 2025
Meta has announced that WhatsApp will no longer be supported on older Android devices, specifically those running Android KitKat or earlier. This change will take effect on January 1, 2025, and affects devices that are over a decade old.
The decision to discontinue support stems from WhatsApp’s continuous evolution, as new features and functionalities require more advanced hardware. Upcoming updates, including AI-driven tools and enhanced features, are incompatible with outdated devices.
Below is a list of some of the affected smartphones:
- Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
- Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
- HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
- LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
- Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
If you are still using any of these devices, whether as a backup or a primary phone, it’s crucial to transfer your WhatsApp data to a newer device before the deadline. Failing to do so will result in the loss of all chat history and media.
Meta has previously announced a similar move for iPhones, ending support for devices running iOS versions older than 15.1. However, iPhone users will have until May 2025 to make the necessary updates.
